A nature and culture experience

The Matakan site, located on one of the many islands in the vast expanse of Kempt Lake, is a 40-minute boat ride away from Manawan. This relay station holds a strong symbolic value. Until the early 20th century, the traditionally nomadic Atikamekw people would stop off to rest at this post before paddling on to their next destination. Nestled in a pristine natural setting, the Matakan site offers three-day, two-night immersive stays where visitors can discover the culture and lifestyle of the Atikamekw, with a focus on the ancestral activities they still practice today. Visitors can learn about traditional fishing methods or birch bark crafts, hike through the forest, or explore the area by canoe.
